Spring and Summer Electrical Safety Tips
- When using a ladder, always be aware of low hanging power lines.
- Never use a metal ladder around electrical lines.
- Always check your extension cord to make sure it's rated for outdoor use and is the proper gauge for the tool or appliance you're using.
- Never dig around your house or business without first calling 8-1-1 to check for underground power lines.
- Don't use outdoor power tools in the rain or while working with wet surfaces.
- Treat all downed, hanging, or burning wires as though they are "live" and stay away from them.
- Keep kites away from electric power lines.
- If you're in a car that makes contact with a power line, stay inside if possible. If you have to get out, jump with your feet together. Then hop away, keeping both feet close together.
- Never use an electric lawnmower on wet grass.
- Don't climb trees near power lines.
- Make sure all farm equipment can clear overhead wires in the fields and farmyards.
- Always use GFCIs (ground fault circuit interrupters) in all barns, sheds, or service buildings.
- A family pool is a great way to spend time together. Make sure to build or place your pool at least 25 feet away from electric lines. Keep electrical devices such as radios and CD players away from the pool or wet surfaces.
- If your home should flood during a storm, do not use electrical appliances until they have been dried and inspected.
- Never connect generators to another power source such as power lines. The reverse flow of electricity or "backfeed" can electrocute an unsuspecting utility worker. Call us at 1-800-992-3269 to find out how to correctly install a generator.
