Rate adjustment approval process moving forward

Clark Energy filed a request for a base rate adjustment with the Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) on November 18, 2009. Since filing the initial request, the PSC has made three solicitations for more information and Clark Energy's responses were made on November 24, 2009 and January 4 and January 26, 2010. The PSC must approve any rate increase before the new rates can go into effect.

As an intervenor in the case, the Attorney General also made a request for data and Clark's response was made on January 4, 2010. The Attorney General will make recommendations to Clark Energy and the PSC on their findings in the case. If all parties to the case agree on the findings, the PSC will then review all the data it collects to determine the final outcome of the case. If questions are still unanswered, a formal hearing before the PSC will be scheduled to settle the case.

Clark Energy is seeking an average increase in revenue of 9.5%. This amount will vary between residential, commercial, and industrial classes because of the different cots associated with providing service to each type of consumer. If approved, Clark Energy members could see the increase reflected on their bills early to mid-summer.

Expenses to provide reliable and safe power to our members have been rapidly rising for the past several years. Although we have tried our best to mitigate these costs, we can no longer continue to do so and provide the same quality service you have come to expect from Clark Energy. The rising costs that member-owned cooperatives have experienced have also had an influence on investor-owned (IOUs) as witnessed by the recent notices of impending rate increases by IOUs. As costs for operating expenses rise, unfortunately so must the rates that are charged to consumers.
